Hard to believe but Birkenstock is over 200 years old and still going strong. Clarks Originals is known for its fashion heritage and in this fashion conscious age the brand ignites our passion for all things 'Old Skool'. The buying team at Aspecto have a bit of a 'thing' for the up and coming Cruyff label. Essentially the appearance of these shoes is old football boot meets modern styling. The shoes are a little flamboyant but it is fresh and here at Aspecto we think there is a point of difference between Cruyff and other brands targeting the same market.

Johan Cruyff's vision became reality when he began working with another legend and
close friend, Emilio Lazzarini, a famous Italian designer. Lazzarini is responsible
for the flexibility and comfort that is integrated into each and every design. Cruyff

The current trend appears to be 'all things Scandinavian' this season particularly when it comes to denim. The Dr Denim brand is new to Aspecto and our Buyers feel it is a great entry point with very reasonably priced denim and distribution is restricted. This range is quite small fitting so you may need to size up one full size.

Yet another Swedish based jeans operator to appear in the market Dr Denim was established in August 2004 in Copenhagen. The jeans on offer within this brand are rooted in vintage styling and the range includes vintage characteristics such as 15.5 oz orange selvedge denim. Among the fabrics without selvedge you will find are a range of slub, crossfire, flat finish and stretch compositions. All fabrics are sanforized; a trademark used for fabric pre shrunk by a patented mechanical process so as to minimize later shrinkage.

Edwin is an ever growing brand and a favourite with staff and customers alike. Edwin use Japanese denim to its very best and have created a cool denim brand which is not overly expensive and the washes and fit are terrific.

Edwin started jeans production in 1961 and the brand has come to the forefront of the jean market because of their innovative washing processes and techniques. The jeans are ever popular with Aspecto staff and customers alike.

Hidehiko Yamane was the founder came across a 1950s American loom capable of weaving forty metres of a selvedge denim a day. He personally used to paint his famous seagull logo on each article, a long and expensive process. Demand has moved the brand forward and the range has been extended. The iconic logo is a firm favourite with many of our Aspecto customers.

Fred Perry the man
It’s not often we Brits have a sportsman to shout about but Fred was a working class hero from a socialist background in the North of England who, despite the prejudices of the All England Club became the best tennis player the UK has ever seen winning four grand slams. Fred faced the disapproval of the establishment not only because of his origins but because he always dressed impeccably on court and was not afraid of ‘gamesmanship’ in fact he’d do anything to win. Fred played as an amateur until 1936 when he became an American citizen and coached the likes of the Marx Brothers, Chaplin, Flynn and Niven. A damaged elbow brought the end to his playing career when he became a commentator for the BBC.

Fred Perry the brand
In 1941 Tibby Wenger asked Perry to endorse one of his products and after some deliberation Perry decided to become a partner in the brand. The first iconic sports polo shirt with its slim line shape came into being in 1952 when in a cute marketing move Fred handed his shirts out to Wimbledon players …it was the first time Wimbledon was televised and his product placement ensured that the brand would be a huge success.

The laurel wreath originated from the Lawn Tennis Association and was the logo which appeared on Davis Cup clothing back in the 1930s. Fred approached the LTA who agreed he could use the insignia and it is now one of the best known logos worldwide.

Fred’s astute marketing came to the fore when he began to initial shirts (two letters only) for celebrities which dissuaded them from selling them. There were only three exceptions to this rule, Perry himself, John F Kennedy and Billy Jean King.

Goliath was founded in Holland in the mid 1920s' and started out making cricket shoes but their product has shifted into the leisure market to produce footwear which is a fusion of sports, quality, style and function.

Grenson have a long and illustrious history in the manufacture of welted footwear. Here at Aspecto we view Grenson as a key brand for SS2010 and the styles Dylan, Smith and William are readily available online and in store. Aspecto have sold Grenson footwear for many seasons and the consistency of the end product ensures the longevity of this brand.

Northamptonshire has for many centuries been the home of the English shoemaker's art and was where the Grenson shoe was born. In the mid 1800s shoe making was still a cottage industry and William Green learned the business whilst helping his mother to handcraft boots at home. William's products soon became renowned for their consistency of craftsmanship and materials; and his 'outworker contract' soon attracted the best craftsmen in the area. William realised that if he was to expand his business, keep his costs under control and remain true to the contract the best option was to build and equip his own factory; 'Greens Yard' was opened in 1874 and was amongst the first to adopt the recently invented Goodyear welt method of construction.
In the early 1950s Grenson Shoes quickly adapted to changes in public taste, for the shoe had now became the predominant form of footwear as opposed to the boot which predominated before the war.
Whilst Goodyear welted production was and still is at the heart of Grenson's business, the company has continued to explore ways in which comfort and appearance can be further enhanced with the introduction of innovations such as the Grens-in Sole to provide soft, underfoot flexibility.
Manufacturing techniques have also changed, albeit that the vast majority of their shoes are still hand-crafted. Similarly, changing lifestyles not least, increased travel by car and less walking has meant that innovation in design and use of materials has kept our range modern whilst retaining the heritage and craftsmanship that is encapsulated in the phrase: 'Grenson England's Master Shoemakers since 1866'.

J Lindeberg has changed its profile recently and what was originally perceived as a golf brand has extended its range into men's casual fashion. Aspecto have a great selection of polos, t shirts, shirts, knitwear and pants available from this Swedish design house.

Jeffery West is another Northampton based footwear design brand of distinction but these guys do go out on a design limb with almost anal detail paid to linings, sole units, punch work and of course the ubiquitous 'cleft heel'. Aspecto love the craftsmanship which this brand undoubtedly exhibits but it's not for the shy, you will stand out in a crowd.
Jeffery West
From the outset their intention was that Jeffery~West shoes would be imbued with all the craftsmanship, quality, and pedigree available in having shoes manufactured by Northampton factories with hundreds of years of experience, but that to this history they would welt cutting edge styles, overt elegance, fulsome flamboyance, develop innovative new lasts, and utilise an array of leathers and colours, imagination all too often lacking in men's shoes, and particularly in shoes that are so well made they do not go to pieces if you look at them twice. There are those that have criticised Jeffery~West for seeming to play fast and loose with tradition but in buying a Jeffery West shoe from Aspecto you are buying the manufacturing heritage with a Jeffery West slant.

To show the cloven hoof shows a knavish intention and with all Jeffery~West shoes and boots bearing the signature style of a cleft heel since the first collection, their wearers continue to tread a line between respectability and rascality. The idiosyncratic Jeffery~West design handwriting extends to the smallest detail; the punching is always diamond shaped, inspired both by Gothic and Victorian Gothic Revival architecture, which also directly informs the arrowhead wingtips.

It seems that Lacoste have been around for ever but this is the first season we have stocked their products at Aspecto. The brand offers the all important heritage in great summer colours to give your wardrobe a lift. The Lacoste classic fit polo shirts are slightly shorter in length and have a larger collar that those of their counterparts at Ralph Lauren.

After retiring from tennis, René Lacoste founded La Chemise Lacoste in 1933 with André Gillier, the owner and President of the largest French knitwear manufacturing firm at the time. They began to produce the revolutionary tennis shirt Lacoste had designed and worn on the tennis courts with the crocodile logo embroidered on the chest. To the best of our knowledge, this was the first time that a brand name had appeared on the outside of an article of clothing.

The Lacoste shirt immediately revolutionised men's sportswear, replacing the classical woven fabric, long-sleeved and starched shirts which players had worn on the courts until then with a jersey pique. Today, the choice between Lacoste and Ralph Lauren generally comes down to colour and cut, the American polo is cut longer and narrower whilst the Lacoste version is slightly shorter with a bigger collar.

Luke Clothing has been sold at Aspecto for the past couple of seasons and is a brand growing in popularity. Luke 1977 garments are well made and are competitively priced and this coupled with their tight distribution policy ensures that you don't see everyone wearing the same piece.

Behind Luke 1977 is Luke Roper, who set up the label with his lifelong friend Simon Poole. Luke was just 12 when he began his fashion career and mastered the sewing machine. The menswear brand has a loyal Indy following that has seen Luke 1977 evolve a long way from the days when Luke tested his designs on his school mates in the playground, to become a booming UK brand. By the age of 15, Luke was making shirts and trousers for friends. Luke attended Central Saint Martins College of Fashion and became known for his edgy but practical designs. Stylish but masculine was his trademark look, with a dollop of quirky humour thrown in, it's not surprising Luke 1977 became the 'bit of a rogue' of the designer labels.

The brand created 'Dresslexia' in homage to the fact many creative types suffer from dyslexia (the inability to spell). Dresslexia was a parody of the inability to dress properly attacking the masses in the pubs and clubs on a Saturday night. Luke 1977 declared they would, clean the marketplace of disco distressed denim and avoid the scenario of every Tom, Dick and Abdul wearing the same top garment!

Luke Roper's flair for fashion combined with Simon Poole's ability in fashion sales (he led the French Connection sales team before co creating Luke 1977) ensured their new label was dressed for success. The couple were eager to follow their dreams, Poole told the press about the day Luke 1977 was launched: We ended up starting the business then, in September 2001, the day the Twin Towers came down in New York. I put £80,000 in - every penny of commission I'd ever earned.
Their passion paid. Luke 1977 has made its name for the smart Saturday night crowd.

Original Penguin was established in 1955 by Munsingwear in the USA but was bought by Perry Ellis in 1996. The Original Penguin golf-shirt became a staple in suburban leisure until well into the 1980s and Perry Ellis have taken the brand to another level in casual leisure wear.

The Pointer shoes brand came about as a reaction to the technical limited edition trainers which were being regurgitated each season by other brands. No longer is Pointer just a lo tech sneaker manufacturer but a fully fledged footwear brand. Aspecto sell a range of Pointer casual shoes for SS2010 including the AJS, Barajas, Crago and Cyril styles.

What was your favourite t-shirt growing up? The Original Retro Brand has recreated your favourite old t-shirt by combining all the qualities of a great fitting t-shirt with classic logos from the past and present. They have developed the latest techniques in garment dyeing and softening in order to produce the ideal vintage feel t-shirt everyone is wearing with logos from your favourite Collegiate product, NFL, NHL, Vintage Minor League Baseball.

Rivieras were the leisure shoes worn on the Costa Brava just after the WWII and whilst they have been re-styled they do retain that geeky 50s feel. The quintessential summer leisure shoe with a woven cotton and canvas upper, saddle stitched welt, leather insole and terry cloth lining. I did doubt our Aspecto Buyers' sanity when they purchased this brand but based upon current sales I think I will have to eat my words!

Sebago Docksides are 40 years old this year but the demand has never been greater with the nautical theme so prominent for Summer 2010. These iconic deck shoes have a seamless leather upper with slip resistant and non-marking rubber soles and the eyelets, for the hide laces, are made of non-corrosive brass. Sebago are having their third season at Aspecto and we think this could be the biggest yet.

It is unusual for a brand to restrict manufacture but Shofolk footwear have set their stall out to do precisely this ….they obviously want demand to exceed supply. Aspecto have ordered a select range of Alaric, Armstrong and Harry styles for SS2010 but the signature shoe is undoubted Armstrong which has also been carried forward into the Autumn.

Shofolk believe that uniqueness and individuality are hard to find these days and have endeavoured to provide distinctive shapes and colour palettes which distinguish their collection from the crowd. Shofolk started out in 2004 as the sister footwear brand to the Folk clothing Collection. The men's footwear collection began with hand stitched moccasins and then progressed with the addition of desert boots and track sole footwear. The quirkiness of the collection allows Shofolk to make a statement providing aspirational shoes that are made for comfort but have a fun aesthetic attention to detail that can't be found elsewhere. Shofolk products are handcrafted in Portugal and made from natural raw leathers. The Buying Team at Aspecto feel there is a need for a point of difference in footwear designs for the Summer and this brand has the potential to fill that gap in the market.

Simple make a 'nice little shoe' with an ecological feel. Simple create shoes from sustainable products so if you want to look good and help the planet this is the way to go.

Sperry offer a heritage performance deck shoe with all the right credentials in great leathers. Don't buy cheap copies they don't last but this is the real McCoy and should be worn with rolled up jeans or chinos. This is our buyers big tip for Summer 2010

Sperry Top-Sider was created in 1935 when the non-slip sole was patented by Paul Sperry after having seen his dog run without slipping on the ice. Turning over his dog's paw he noted the cracks and cuts going in all directions and this inspired his new sole unit. Since inventing the first boat shoe the brand has tended to focus on those living on and around the ocean but as most Aspecto consumers will know a deck shoe is vital in your wardrobe.

S.I.T.H or Star in the Hood, to give it its full name, was the name of Tinchy Stryder's first album and this clothing range comprising t shirts, hoodies and sweats has spun off the back of the music. All the products have bold in your face branding and no one will doubt you are from the 'hood'!

The Stussy brand reaches is 30 year anniversary this year and the brand has been a main stay at Aspecto since 1990 when we first acquired this fashion label. Stussy has respect for being a cool international street label and that it we continue to stock it at Aspecto.

Shawn Stussy started his label in the 1980s scrawling his signature on tee shirts to sell in Laguna, California. The brand has evolved and over the years has been influenced by music, skaters and artists. The brand has worldwide respect as an international street wear label. Aspecto has stocked this brand since 1989 and the brand is as popular as ever.

Superga 2750 Heritage was born in 1925 in Turin. These shoes are easy to wear and designed to dress up or down. It can be washed like your favourite jean to create your own vintage look.

The Victorinox clothing collection emanates from the brand which created the swiss army knife. This Swiss label has everything you'd expect from a quality brand and the garments are engineered to perfection. Just be warned the sizes are a little generous and you may need to size down.

This is a collaboration between Woolrich and the New York based Japanese designer Daiki Suzuki (Engineered Garments fame). The collection stems from a desire to rediscover the American manufacturing tradition and uses traditional fabrics from Woolrich looms fused with the Japanese flare for detail and design. For all you keen spellers out there Woolen is spelt with one 'l'.

Woolrich has been around in Pennsylvania since 1830 and during the American Civil War and WWI provided uniforms for the armed forces. The product range was extended into outdoor apparel with a hunting/outdoor feel. Flannel shirts became a staple in the late 60s and in the 80s Arctic parkas as worn by construction workers in Alaska became a huge seller. Truly a heritage brand where the fabric innovations found in Goretex and Cordura have enhanced the product offering.

Y-3 designer footwear doesn't sacrifice fashion for functionality.
